Bob Schulten’s American Service, December 16, 1962 to July
14, 1965:
December 16, 1962—I started working at Bob Schulten’s American Station. I worked
until May 6, 1964 and then left for the Army. I started with Bob again, October
4, 1964 to July 14, 1965. Bob became a good friend and mentor. Years later, when
he got out of the Service Station business, he did my book work and taxes for
many years (even when I went into real estate). Bob is still a good friend. I
started at $1.00 per hour.
January 16, 1963—I was raised to $1.10 per hour. January 30, 1963—I was raised
to $1.15 per hour. April 3, 1963—I was raised to $1.25 per hour. July 3, 1963—I
was raised to $1.30 per hour. September 4, 1963—I was raised to $1.35 per hour.
November 6, 1963—I was raised to $1.40 per hour. December 11, 1963—I was raised
to $1.45 per hour. January 8, 1964—I was raised to $1.50 per hour. May 6, 1964—I
left my job at Schulten's American for the Army. October 4, 1964—Started working
for Bob Schulten again. I was paid $1.60 per hour. February 10, 1965 I was
raised to $1.65 per hour with Bob Schulten. March 17, 1965—I was raised to $1.70
per hour. July, 14, 1965—I stopped working for Bob Schulten, to open my own
station.
Sometime in 1965—Jim Durham and Jack Wessling agreed to help me get an American
Oil Service Station. They owned Commonwealth Distributing Company which was the
American Oil Franchise in Louisville. I got along well with them. They were in
the process with American Oil of buying the corner lot at Goose Creek Road and
Westport Road, and were going to build a station there in the next year. They
eventually built there and that would have been my station, but Mr. Frymire got
sick and I leased his station on Shelbyville Road. Then Bob Schulten left
American and I took over his. I was much better off doing what I did.
